Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This master's thesis explores the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) into product and production development processes within the robotics industry. Conducted in collaboration with ABB Robotics, the study aims to identify which phases of the development process offer the greatest potential for VR application, and to examine the associated benefits and challenges of the technology. The research has been guided by the following questions: (1) How could VR be utilized across the various phases of development processes? (2) What are the key challenges and advantages of using VR in development contexts?A qualitative research approach was adopted, employing a case study design. Empirical data was gathered through eleven semi-structured interviews with professionals and experts in product and production development, as well as VR technology. The collected data was thematically analyzed and juxtaposed with existing literature in the field. The findings indicate that VR is perceived as particularly valuable during the concept development phase, where it enables faster iterations, enhanced communication, and full-scale visualization of design ideas. Further applications were identified in system-level and detailed design, as well as in training activities prior to production ramp-up. Key advantages highlighted include a reduced need for physical prototypes, improved consensus among project stakeholders, and more effective ergonomic analyses. However, several challenges were also noted, including high implementation costs, limited internal competence, and constrained usage during the planning and testing stages. In conclusion, the study suggests that VR holds considerable potential to enhance efficiency across multiple phases of the development process within the robotics sector. Nonetheless, successful implementation necessitates strategic planning, targeted training initiatives, and robust organizational support.
