Abstract [en]

This thesis, conducted by students at Mälardalen University, presents a conceptual solution for ensuring water supply during temporary water outages. The report, written at an undergraduate level, outlines a product development process in which an idea has been transformed into a concrete concept proposal. Through surveys and interviews with experts in water and sewage management, the students gathered valuable insights regarding the requirements and preferences for an effective solution.

The objective of the project was to develop a product primarily intended for water and sewage companies as an emergency solution for water outages, while also allowing for adaptability in other scenarios. The applied methodology is based on Ullman's (2010) framework for product development, modelled to meet the specific needs of the project.

To create a functional prototype, various components needed to be assembled and integrated; however, the project resulted in a conceptual proposal rather than an actual prototype. The central component of this proposal is a trailer designed for easy transport of the system. Two key components play a crucial role: a pump and a tank. The pump, which must withstand water pressure between 2 and 7 bar, is the core of the project and is designed to be a standard component available on the market. The tank, which will be mounted on the trailer, must have adequate capacity and should be transported both empty and full to ensure good driving characteristics.

During the project, the students conducted a preliminary test on the coupling pressure, which is critical for understanding the system's dynamics. The proposed product is based on standard components strategically placed to enable transportation with a full load and “empty load”. As the concept has not been tested in a physical environment, this work serves as a valuable foundation for any company that chooses to further develop the concept.

Recommendations for future work include the development of user instructions for the operation of the trailer, as well as advancing towards creating a physical product. Since the students did not collaborate with a company, only a visual representation of the product was created using SolidWorks.
