Student Influence – a silent practice that needs to be heard : A phenomenographic interview study on teachers’ perceptions of student influence to promote learning (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how teachers in compulsory school years 1–9, in accordance with the Swedish curriculum Lgr 22, implement student influence in their teaching in order to create conditions for students to develop their own learning. The study also aims to highlight how teachers perceive the collective work within the school to develop teaching in relation to student influence. Student influence is emphasized in the national steering documents as a central part of the school’s democratic mission, yet previous research shows that the concept is often interpreted differently in practice.

The study was conducted using a qualitative method with a phenomenographic approach. The data collection was based on semi-structured interviews with a number of teachers working in grades 1–9. The analysis resulted in descriptive categories that illustrate variations in how student influence is understood and applied in teaching.

The study shows that student influence is used as a pedagogical tool, but that the concept is rarely made explicit to students or colleagues, which results in a silent practice. The study broadens the understanding of student influence as a complex phenomenon and frames it through curriculum theory. The conclusion is that the concept needs to be highlighted and clarified in order to break the silent practice, and that student influence should become a structured part of systematic quality development work.
