Abstract [en]
ABSTRAKT
Background: Pressure ulcers are a recurring and well-known problem in healthcare, despite being considered preventable patient injuries. For patients, pressure ulcers cause not only physical suffering but also psychological and social consequences such as reduced independence and decreased quality of life. Nurses play a central yet complex role in prevention, influenced by ethical considerations, organizational conditions, and the need for knowledge and clinical judgment. Research shows that nurses often face obstacles such as limited resources, heavy workloads, and insufficient education, which hinder consistent and person-centered preventive care. Aim: To describe nurses’ experiences of pressure ulcer preventive nursing care. Method: A general literature review was conducted according to Friberg’s model. Ten scientific articles were included, eight with a qualitative and two with a quantitative approach. The articles were quality-assessed, compiled, and analyzed to identify similarities and differences in nurses’ experiences. Results: Four themes emerged: Between ideals and organizational conditions, Resources as prerequisites, Professional collaboration and involvement. The results showed that organizational factors, knowledge, and collaboration influence preventive work, while lack of time and insufficient education act as barriers. Conclusion: Continuous education, organizational support, and sufficient resources are required to ensure safe and evidence-based pressure ulcer prevention.
Keywords: Experiences, integrative literature review, nurses, pressure ulcers, preventive nursing care.
