Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: ACL ruptures are the most common knee injury among young athletes. The physiotherapist’s task in the rehabilitation of ACL injuries is to protect against the negative consequences that an injury can entail from at psychosocial perspective and at the same time support the healing process with guidance and support in rehabilitation. To the knowledge of the study authors, there is no previous research based on physiotherapists experience of psychosocial impact in young patients with ACL injury.

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate physiotherapists experience of the importance of psychological and social factors on the rehabilitation of ACL injuries for patients between the ages of 13-19.

Method: Qualitative design with semi-structured interviews. Seven physiotherapists who have rehabilitated patients with ACL injuries were included in the study. Qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used as the analysis method.

Results: The analysis resulted in nine subcategories that were divided into three main categories: Social factors affect rehabilitation, phycological factors affect rehabilitation and the patient’s age affect rehabilitation.

Conclusion: The results from the participating physiotherapists of this study indicate that social and psychological factors have a major impact on the rehabilitation of young patients with an ACL injury and that young patients appear to be more severely affected by psychological factors and have a greater need for social support.
