The purpose of this study is to examine what competencies, abilities and attributes an innovation manager need in order to be successful in the role. Furthermore, to examine suitable areas of responsibilities and other considerations related to an implementation of the role in an organization.

This is a qualitative case study where the epistemological perspective empirical realism and the ontological position constructionism have been applied. Structured interviews have been the basis for collecting data and thematic analyses have been used to analyze the data.  The conclusions of the study are the following. There were many competencies, abilities and attributes expressed by the respondents which can be related to the research fields innovation management and innovations competence. These became subjected to a synthesis of competencies, abilities and attributes. Further, there were three findings that was unique in the research field which is the relevance of creativity, the propensity to take risks and the ability to conceptualize. Additionally, there were three findings that was unique in the interviews. The ability to challenge existing structures, knowledge about the market and the comprehension of the non-linear. Regarding the areas of responsibilities, the findings were categorized into two different orientations of the role. The strategic orientation, in which I propose six different areas of responsibilities. The operationally orientated role, in which I propose eight different areas of responsibilities. Concerning the implementation of the role, I found out factors that influence the formulation of the role itself. These where categorized into organization, positioning and resource related. And eventually, I present some general critical aspects that can be taken into consideration while formulating the role in an organization.

Denna studie syftar till att kartlägga vilka kompetenser, förmågor och personliga egenskaper en innovationsledare behöver för att vara framgångsrik i sin roll, samt lämpliga ansvarsområden och övriga omständigheter i samband med en tillsättning av rollen i en organisation.

 Det här är en kvalitativ fallstudie med det kunskapsteoretiska perspektivet empirisk realism och ontologiska positionen konstruktionism. Strukturerade intervjuer har använts för datainsamling och tematiska analyser har använts för att analysera data.  Studien sammanfattar följande. Det var många kompetenser, förmågor och egenskaper uttryckta av respondenterna som överensstämmer med forskningen på området innovationsledning och innovationskompetens. Dessa likheter blev föremål för en syntetisering av kompetenser, förmågor och egenskaper som presenteras i denna uppsats. Vidare så var det tre upptäckter som bara förekom i forskningen, betydelsen av kreativitet, benägenheten att ta risker och konceptualiseringsförmågan. Tre upptäckter som enbart förekom i intervjuerna var förmågan att utmana befintliga strukturer, marknadskunskap och förståelsen för det icke-linjära. Gällande ansvarsområden kategoriserades upptäckterna i två olika orienteringar av rollen. Den strategiska orienteringen, i vilken jag presenterar sex olika ansvarsområden. Den operativa orienteringen, i vilken jag presenterar åtta olika ansvarsområden. Gällande skapandet av rollen i en organisation fann jag faktorer som påverkar själva utformningen av rollen. Dessa kategorireades i organisationsrelaterade, positioneringsrelaterade och resursrelaterade faktorer. Vidare så presenterar jag några kritiska omständigheter som kan tas i beaktande vid en implementering av rollen i en organisation.
