Abstract [en]
Since the beginning of the 2000s, the LGBTQ rights have changed drastically. Same-sex marriage has become legal in the majority of Western countries and negative attitudes towards homosexuals have been vastly neutralized. This has created a flourishing environment for a gay identity. Therefore, gay culture has been able to grow and develop over time to what is is today; a culture characterized by liberalism and ideas about sexual freedom. In the debate about sexual minorities, the patriarchy has been blamed for cultivating negative attitudes towards homosexuals (Ambjörnsson, 2016). But what really happens behind the scenes in the gay community? This essay explored the stereotypes among young gay men and the possible physical as well psychological consequences these stereotypes cause. The results showed that stereotypes existed among young homosexual men and that these were characterized by traditional heterosexual gender roles as well as beauty ideals and body image. However, it is important to note that some respondents felt that stereotypes and gender norms differed from each other. The study also found that the stereotypes could be associated with psychological and physiological consequences such as anxiety and negative self-image and showed that these can create long-term consequences for the individual.
