Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care has the task of promoting patients' quality of life. In palliative care are nurses responsible for the care of patients, where they must ensure that their needs, problems and desires are met. With that said is communication essential to obtaining data from patients. Integrity and dignity are qualities that patients describe as important to be allowed to preserve in care. Aim: To create an overview of nurses' experiences of caring for patients in palliative care. Method: A general literature review has been performed. Eleven selected articles have been analysed, of which nine of these are qualitative and two quantitative. Results: Nurses experienced that communication is essential in palliative care. Communication could shed light on patients' needs, problems and desires, as a data collection could be carried out. Nurses' experiences also showed that patients' integrity and dignity should be considered. Nurses experienced that having a good knowledge in palliative care to contribute with good care. The lack of time was distinctive as an obstacle for nurses. This resulted in some patients being prioritized while others were being treated with less care. Conclusion: Nurses' experiences showed a great responsibility in palliative care, including starting from patients’ needs, problems and desires. Communication is a prerequisite for identifying these needs, problems and desires.
