Ecological economics can be broadly defined as “economics for sustainable development or for sustainability”. Reference to “ecological economics” began in the late 1980s and is very much connected with the appearance of the Ecological Economics journal. In this essay, varieties of ecological economics are discussed. A political and institutional version of ecological economics in the spirit of William Kapp and Gunnar Myrdal is emphasized. Economics is defined in multidimensional and political terms where individuals and organizations are interpreted as political economic persons and political economic organizations respectively, acting in a democratic society.
