Abstract [sv]

Background: Previous research shows that nurses perceived palliative care as a challenging yet essential part of healthcare. Palliative care aims to alleviate suffering and improve the quality of life for patients at the end of life and their families. Common challenges including staff shortages, inadequate training, and emotional strain, while communication, empathy, and care relationships characterizing respect were highlighted as crucial.  The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of providing palliative care to patients at the end of life.  Method: A general literature review in which ten scientific articles were analyzed, including seven qualitative and three quantitative studies.  Results: Nurses reported that staff shortages hindered their ability to provide quality care. Communication with patients and their families was both important and challenging, especially during emotionally charged conversations. Inadequate training affected their ability to manage complex situations, while experience contributed to increased confidence and competence in their professional role.  Conclusion: Palliative care at the end of life is complex and places high demands on the nurse's competence. To ensure dignified and individualized care, adequate education and interprofessional collaboration are essential.  Keywords: Communication, end of life, quality of life, palliative care, nurses, care experiences.
