Institutional drivers behind the implementation of dual materiality analysis in Swedish industrial companies: A study on transparency, governance and symbolism (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine and analyse the methods used by large Swedish industrial companies to report their double materiality assessments in accordance with the CSRD. It also aims to contribute knowledge about how double materiality is applied in practice. The goal is to identify and compare which sustainability issues these companies consider financially and impact-wise material, as well as to investigate whether this work is conducted symbolically rather than for practical value.

Method: A qualitative method has been implemented in the form of a document analysis followed by semi-structured interviews.

Conclusion: The study shows that the companies within the sample tend to implement their double materiality assessments in similar ways, but the outcomes regarding material issues differ significantly between them. The results indicate that these companies are largely driven by a pursuit of legitimacy and exhibit signs of decoupling in their reporting. However, this may potentially be attributed to a lack of knowledge and uncertainty within a field that remains relatively unexplored.
