Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In social work professionals are often required to make complex decisions. This study explores how boundary-crossing actions can contribute to the development of practical knowledge. The material consists of 23 personal narratives written by social workers with diverse professional backgrounds and life experiences. The study follows a qualitative approach, using narrative and thematic coding to deepen the interpretation. The theoretical framework is grounded in three key perspectives: Donald Schön’s theory of reflective practice, Berger and Luckman's theory of social construction and Michael Polanyi's theory of tactic knowledge. The findings show that social workers often cross professional boundaries and formal guidelines to build alliances and foster trust. All narratives indicate that such actions often result in positive outcomes for clients. At the same time, reflective thoughts reveal an underlying awareness among social workers of the potential consequences. Unclear or ambiguous professional boundaries may lead to varying outcomes for both the practitioner and the client. Before crossing these boundaries, actions often appear to occur through an unconscious process that merges tacit knowledge with professional judgment. This study aims to understand how boundary-crossing actions can be experienced, as both meaningful and essential to the development and integration of professional knowledge.
