Denna studie är ett examensarbete för en kandidatutbildning inom Informationsdesign, med inriktning mot Rumslig Gestaltning. Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka hur visuella signaler påverkar och kan främja mänsklig interaktion, bidra till ökade flöden och ett mer levande centrum. Ytterligare syftar arbetet till att involvera användarna under processens gång för att säkerställa att användarnas behov och önskemål tillgodoses samt stärker deras koppling till platsen. Vidare är syftet att skapa ett tydligt och lättförståeligt gestaltningsförslag som bidrar till att användare enkelt kan förstå och tolka platsen och sedermera skapa en tydlig mental karta av Eskilstuna centrum. Baserat på en iterativ designprocess, användarinvolvering samt teori och tidigare forskning skapas en omgestaltning av ett centralt torg i Eskilstuna centrum som syftar till att bidra till en positiv användarupplevelse.

Denna studie förhåller sig till teorier om biofili, aktiviteter i urbana stadsrum samt hur dessa påverkar och påverkas av en plats fysiska förutsättningar. Studien baseras även på teorier som behandlar användares grundläggande tolkning och förståelse av platser och hur detta påverkar och sedermera kan bidra till positiva användarupplevelser samt hur detta förhåller sig till place attachment. På sikt kan ett tydligt designförslag, med hög läsbarhet, genom positiva användarupplevelser, leda till en starkare mental bild av centrum och skapa place attachment hos användarna. 

De teorier samt tidigare forskning som bearbetas i arbetet visar bland annat på att människor mår bra av naturnära element vilket vidare kan bidra till positiva användarupplevelser, framför allt i urbana miljöer. Denna studie stärker detta genom att majoriteten av de användare som deltagit i studien uttryckt positiva kopplingar till naturnära- och inspirerade element.

This study is a thesis for a bachelor’s degree program in Information Design, with a specialization in Spatial Design. The aim of this work is to examine how visual signals affect and can promote human interaction, contribute to increased flows, and create a more vibrant city center. Another aim of the study is to involve users throughout the process to ensure that their needs and desires are met, as well as to strengthen their connection to this location. Furthermore, the purpose is to create a clear and easy-to-understand design proposal that helps users easily comprehend and interpret the space, eventually forming a clear mental map of Eskilstuna’s city center. Based on an iterative design process, user involvement, and theories and previous research, a redesign of a central square in Eskilstuna's city center is proposed, aiming to contribute to a positive user experience.

This study relates to theories on biophilia, activities in urban spaces, and how these are influenced by, and in turn influence, the physical conditions of a place. The study is also based on theories that address users' basic interpretation and understanding of places, how this affects them, and how it can lead to positive user experiences, as well as how this relates to place attachment. In the long term, a clear design proposal with high legibility, through positive user experiences, can lead to a stronger mental image of the city center and foster place attachment among users.

The theories and previous research examined in this work indicate, among other things, that people benefit from elements inspired by nature, which can further contribute to positive user experiences, especially in urban environments. This study reinforces this, as the majority of the users who participated in the study expressed positive connections to nature-related and nature-inspired elements.
